Description:
Located in the historic, downtown district of Savannah, Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) has experienced phenomenal growth, generating high demand for housing and resulting in overcrowding of their existing student housing facilities. Looking for a way to put over 500 beds on only three-and-a-half acres, SCAD consulted with University Housing Services for a creative solution.
UHS worked diligently with the local Historic Review Board to gain approval for the University’s project that not only achieved 574 beds but satisfied the strict requirements for building in the historic district. UHS suggested ways to incorporate an historic, 160-year-old railroad trestle into the design and encouraged the design team to maintain many of the original site design elements into the new housing structure.
Project features include:
- Pre-cast lightweight concrete structure
- Deep foundations (Dewall piles)
- Oversized elevators for students with art portfolios
- Conference rooms
- Convenience store
- Full-service exercise gym
Beautifully clad in brick and stucco, the facility provides a pedestrian boulevard, linking SCAD’s existing housing with the core of their campus.
